Traffic and Transportation

Background
The Planning and Development Committee will continue to examine traffic and transportation issues as part of an integrated approach to planning Manor Park's future. Development within Manor Park, and within the City of Ottawa, can have an impact on the quality of life of Manor Park residents. Given our geographical location within the City of Ottawa, and the renewed emphasis by the City of Ottawa (as envisioned in the City of Ottawa Official Plan) to maximize growth within the Greenbelt, it can be expected that Manor Park will be subject to various growth issues. We will need to work with the City of Ottawa and with potential developers to ensure that our quality of life is not eroded.

Among the major issues that the Planning & Development Committee will be actively monitoring are:

External Developments:
The site selection of an east-end bridge.
Currently Kettle Island is one of the east end sites that is being examined in an Environmental Assessment. The transfer of CFB Rockcliffe to the Canada Lands Company (CLC). The transfer of the site to CLC will trigger the re-development of the Rockcliffe Airbase. Currently there are only two access roads to this site
- Codds Road (at Montreal Road) and Hemlock Road. The Beechwood Mainstreet Community Design Plan (Link)
- A City of Ottawa initiative in conjunction with adjacent community associations including the New Edinburgh Community Association and the Manor Park Community Association. Volunteers from the Manor Park Community Association have been invited to participate.
- RCMP Canadian Police College - The RCMP are currently developing a long-term land use planning strategy for the Canadian Police College which common the "Home of the Musical Ride". It is expected that an open-house will be held by the RCMP, at which point Manor Park residents will be able to review the work to-date and provide feedback.

Internal Developments:
The rezoning of the Karen Way property (Karen Way and St. Laurent Boulevard). Community residents have been instrumental in working with the developer in an attempt to create a development that is in keeping with the character of Manor Park.

Other Issues:
In attempting to develop a holistic response to community planning, our Planning and Development Committee will also be examining methods to implement local sustainable development initiatives, as well as improving our local streets. In the past few years, the City of Ottawa has implemented various changes to Hemlock Road, St. Laurent Boulevard, and Birch Road. Have these changes worked to improve the traffic/transportation situation? What issues do you currently have? Is there a problem with speeding? Are there issues with safety and tour buses? Sidewalks? Lighting? Aesthetic issues? Cycling/pedestrian conditions? What can we do to improve our community and our environment?

The Planning and Development Committee will be consulting with the community to examine these and other issues that you may have. Stay tuned for future updates and initiatives in your community. In the meantime, if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please contact Jeffrey Thiessen (741-8329) or any other member of the Planning and Development Committee.
